The LA Rams decide to select Van Jefferson instead of the following big-play receivers

Florida Gators wide receiver Van Jefferson was just taken by the LA Rams as the 57th overall pick by the LA Rams, in the 2020 NFL Draft.  Jefferson played wide receiver at the University of Florida after transferring from Ole Miss. He is a big receiver that will fit nicely on the Rams aerial assault.

In college, Jefferson averaged 12.3 yards per reception. He caught 175 passes for 2159 yards with 16 touchdowns in four collegiate seasons. Jefferson looks to be more of a possession type of receiver.

His ability to move the chains downfield gives Jared Goff another weapon to use. Expect Jefferson to complement Cooper Kupp and allow Robert Woods to move into the slot receiver position.

It’s interesting that LA decided to select Jefferson here in round two. There were bigger receivers available to be taken instead of him. You have to trust the Rams draft board and their player evaluation process.

3 WRs that the LA Rams passed over in picking Van Jefferson

First, Denzel Mims would have been a very good pick. He played in the high octane offense of Baylor University. Mims is taller and heavier than Jefferson, 6-feet-3 weighing 207 pounds to 6-feet-1 weighing 195 pounds.

At the NFL Combine, Mims ran a 4.38-second 40-yard dash. He bench-pressed 225 pounds 16 times. Mims has the ability to stretch the field to allow Kupp to work underneath routes.

Next, Bryan Edwards is another big receiver that the Rams passed on. Edwards stands 6-feet-3 weighing 212 pounds. He played for South Carolina in the SEC Conference.

In college, he caught 234 passes for 3045 yards with 22 touchdowns. He averaged 13 yards per catch which definitely moves the chains. He would have been a huge target for Goff on third downs.

Third, Gabriel Davis is another big receiver still on the board. Davis played collegiately at Central Florida. He stands 6-feet-3 weighing 216 pounds.

In 2019, Davis caught 127 passes for 1241 yards. He averaged an amazing 16.1 yards per reception while scoring 23 touchdowns. He would have been an excellent target in the Rams goal-line pass packages.

The Rams draft strategy is beginning to develop. They took a running back and then a wide receiver. Round 3 gives them two more selections. Will they take an offensive lineman or go defense? Stay tuned!
