With the 199th pick the Rams select Jordan Fuller
LA Rams use their 199th pick of the 2020 NFL Draft to select versatile Ohio State safety Jordan Fuller
With the 199th pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, the LA Rams selected 6-foot-2, 203-pound safety Jordan Fuller from Ohio State.
While the pick was a surprising one, the Rams continue to add versatile defensive players. He joins safety/cornerback Terrell Burgess who was selected in round three, as well as the 6-foot-3 hybrid safety/cornerback Alexander Adonis. With this pick, the Rams’ safety room is getting full.
Fuller played traditionally as a single high safety. That contrasts with the Rams, who currently already have on the roster hybrid safeties. The Rams’ starters will be John Johnson III and Taylor Rapp. While Fuller has the ability to play in the box like the two starters, he performs his best when he plays high.
He is great when coming downfield to help in the run game. He has fluid hips when changing direction which helps him clean up mistakes in the secondary. While man-coverage isn’t his strong suit, he can cover tight ends very well, making three rams on the roster who can do so.
Ohio State had him play in man from time to time. But that is not his strong suit, and he performs his best when he is in a zone. Some negatives are his zone range is limited and he can be manipulated by the quarterback’s eyes. While he is great when coming downfield, some describe him as heavy-footed while backpedaling.
He has been on our radar before. He appeared in our 2020 Mock Draft 3.1 where we identified him as a solid addition to the defensive backfield. He also appeared in our 2020 NFL Draft review of potential Big-10 prospect. In this article, he was a solid roster addition to compensate for losing veteran safety Eric Weddle to retirement.
An interesting question this raises is are the Rams looking to move on from current safety John Johnson III. It is a contract year and the Rams might be looking at cheaper options.
Welcome to the Ramily Jordan Fuller.
