OL Tremayne Anchrum gets the nod as the final draft pick for the LA Rams but was there a better candidate out there

The LA Rams waited until the last pick to select an offensive lineman. The Rams running game ranked near the bottom of the NFL in 2019. Tremayne Anchrum is the ideal offensive line prospect to correct that situation.

Tremayne Anchrum played the offensive right tackle for Clemson University. However, he will be moved to play guard for the LA Rams due to his physical size. He stands 6-feet-2 weighing 314 pounds which is makes him the prototypical size of an NFL guard, according to Bill Walsh. As such, you can look for the LA Rams to cross-train him at several offensive line positions.

While some of the Rams past conversions from offensive tackle to guard have struggled due to their higher center of gravity and overleveraged length, Anchrum should actually excel from the transition. His compact build, burst out of this stance, and ability to hold his primary block and then penetrate downfield for secondary and tertiary blocking assignments fall right into his wheelhouse.

Don’t take my word for it. Clemson head coach Dabo Sweeney had this to say about  his offensive lineman:

That’s a pretty solid endorsement by a guy who should know. After all, the Clemson Tigers have competed for the national championship frequently over recent years. And theres  are more words of praise, this time from an unlikely source, Charlie Campbell of walterfootball.com who writes the following:

"Anchrum played tackle and guard at Clemson, helping the Tigers to light up the scoreboard on a weekly basis. He played well enough to earn an invitation to the Senior Bowl, but he struggled there. Considering his height and length limitations for the NFL, Anchrum will have to play on the inside. If he has the quickness and athleticism, playing center would be his best fit given his height."

Last season, he was named first-team All-ACC. He played 842 offensive snaps through 15 games. Anchrum plays each and every play. Availability is very key to making an NFL roster.

However, the LA Rams elected to take him over several larger linemen. Should they have grabbed one of them instead? Here’s a look at those linemen that LA passed over in favor of Anchrum.

The Rams saw something in Anchrum that they liked. You must realize that these draft picks are agonizingly scrutinized before they are made. Since he was drafted near the end of the draft, LA could possibly utilize him on special teams.
