LA Rams rookie LB Clay Johnston’s energy infects entire team
By Bret Stuter
The LA Rams encountered the unbridled energy of newly drafted LB Clay Johnston, and he is already infecting everyone with his enthusiasm
The LA Rams did not address the vacated linebacker positions on day two of the 2020 NFL Draft. With a limited number of picks and plenty of competing players already on the roster, the Rams passed on adding any help for the offensive line or linebacker positions until day three of the NFL Draft. Surprisingly, the team did manage to call out the names of some very intriguing rookies on day three as well.
Let’s focus on Baylor University interior linebacker Clay Johnston, who was selected by the LA Rams with the 234th pick of the 2020 NFL Draft. That is a late round-seven selection, but you would not be able to guess that based on Johnston’s reaction as recorded in this twitter interview:
That enthusiasm immediately gelled everyone on the call. Afterward, Rams head coach Sean McVay admitted to fading, but Johnston’s energy snapped him right back like a shot of adrenaline. But there are more reasons to be excited about Johnston than his infectious energy and enthusiasm.
The Rams day three focused upon the players who would impact special teams play in 2020, and have the potential for larger roles on the team in 2021 and beyond. Special teams play is not for just anyone. The role requires a player who wants to contribute to the overall team success, is both competitive and patient, is coachable, and who can deliver big tackles on the field of play. Baylor linebacker Clay Johnston can deliver all of these prerequisites, plus more.
