Smart productive and versatile

Johnston played the middle linebacker role for the Baylor Bears. During that college career, his capacity to dominate the football field allowed the defense to overcome weakness at some other positions. He could compete for either interior linebacker role for the LA Rams, but will likely be a special teams player in 2020.

While that may feel like a tough rookie season for Johnston, it will likely be the fastest route for his rookie development. He is a dynamo, a player with high energy who translates that into each play. As an LA Ram, Johnston’s initial role on special teams will allow him to fully heal, strengthen to an NFL level, and absorb coach directions which will ensure he is even more effective at the linebacker role when his number is called.

I’m not ruling him out of the competition at this point. Clearly the entire coaching staff is fully aware of Johnston’s potential and enthusiasm by now. While that merely means name recognition, it will likely open the door for Johnston to compete for defensive snaps. If he’s ready, he’ll get his chance. But his primary role in 2020 will likely be special teams, and his selection by the Rams is likely due to the request of ST Coordinator John Bonamego, who is working very hard to ensure that the LA Rams special teams production is among the league leaders in 2020.
