Time to embrace the LA Rams’ perfect imperfections
By Bret Stuter
Hot mess? Which NFL team isn’t right now?
That isn’t to say that the LA Rams are not a hot mess in some of their operations. And it’s not to say this team has not made some questionable decisions, even laughable mistakes. But in the sum of all of its parts, I have truly enjoyed the perfect imperfections of these LA Rams.
As this offseason unfolds like each off-season, there is a segregation of teams which receive very positive press, and teams which receive rather negative press. Then, there are teams which hover somewhere in the middle – whether a bit of positive press in one offseason, but followed up with negative press the following season. Most of which is determined by the team’s performance from the previous season.
It’s a predictable narrative. If a team disappointed record-wise in the previous season, the next year’s coverage about that team remains sullen and pessimistic until the team proves otherwise. That type of “what was, will be” is how people anticipate many future events, so it truly fits the own narrative we write in our own minds.
Right now, the LA Rams have a double whammy of sorts running against them. The team declined from a 13-3 record in 2018, ending with a Super Bowl loss, to a 9-7 record in 2019, ending with no playoff appearance. Is that enough of a downturn to warrant an expectation of a 6-10 record in 2020?
