The LA Rams are making changes to the offense with four quarterbacks that bring different skills, here’s a preview of how they fit.
LA Rams head coach Sean McVay has a long history and familiarity with the West Coast Offense (WCO) family. His grandfather helped Bill Walsh build the San Francisco juggernaut of yesteryear. McVay brought his version to the LA Rams after coaching under Jay Gruden.
In 2008, McVay coached receivers under former Washington Redskins’ head coach Jon Gruden in Tampa Bay. McVay made the jump from the 49ers’ version to the Green Bay version of the WCO. Currently, it makes sense to say that the Rams are moving into a newer modernized version emphasizing the passing game even further, or the Spread Coast offense.
Basically, the Spread Coast is a hybrid mix of the recently arrived Spread offense and the WCO. Since the NFL is a copycat league, there is no team that runs a pure exclusive style of offense. Every offensive coordinator is guilty of taking good plays and incorporating them into his scheme.
The LA Rams appear to be moving towards faster “quick-hit” types of pass plays in 2020. a trademark of the Spread Coast offense, with the hiring of new offensive coordinator Kevin O’Connell. O’Connell also spent time under Gruden in Washington. How much time do you think that McVay, O’Connell, and the Gruden spend time talking offensive football? Probably a lot.
The Rams have four quarterbacks with similar and different skill sets. Each fits the evolving offense differently and similarly. Here’s how they fit into the Rams evolving offensive scheme.
