5 last-second free agents for LA Rams ball control offense
By Bret Stuter
RG Warford
One of the brighter spots on the Rams offensive line last season was the discovery that rookie David Edwards could successfully transition from his collegiate offensive tackle position to that of the right guard. But the circumstances from 2019 were a bit unique. Is it possible that Edwards held his own last year simply because of defenses finding a much easier time of rushing the quarterback against the other four offensive linemen? Perhaps the Rams would be wise to add veteran depth at the right guard position as well and can look no further than veteran right guard Larry Warford.
Warford is the current creme-de-le-creme of NFL free agent offensive linemen right now. But he hasn’t signed. That could be a symptom of his expectation exceeding his market value. But it could simply be a matter of his insisting on a starter role.
He is another dominating run blocker, whose pass protection slipped a gear in 2020. Of course, the LA Rams haven’t the kind of free-spending options other teams might have this late in the off-season. But if the team feels a need to ensure at least one offensive lineman competes for the pro-bowl in 2020, Warford should be a priority signing.
He was a fixture at right guard for the New Orleans Saints, but his decline at pass protection opened the door for the Saints to think twice about his hefty price tag. He is most certainly an NFL starter, a player whose arrival could propel an NFL team over the hump from NFL Playoff contender to a participant.
