While not everyone sees former LA Rams running back C.J. Anderson as a positive addition to this team, there are solid reasons to bring him back for 2020. Some players just “fit” an offensive scheme, and C.J. Anderson undeniably was such a contributor to the team in 2018. The 5-foot-8 225-pound workhorse was disappointed when the LA Rams failed to offer him a contract to return in 2019, but the Rams have treated many of their free agents in a similar fashion.

In fact, they almost rely upon the enticement of the free-agent market to set the market price on players.  Only the few who are adamant about returning to the team, or who discover their market value is not what they expected, end up returning to the Rams.

Does Anderson have any value in 2020? Veteran RB Malcolm Brown is just 27 years old, and his five seasons have added up to just 769 yards of offense.  Anderson’s career is a little more substantial.  While he has only carried the ball 776 times, his 3,497 yards is a solid number. Keep in mind that 299 yards came in just two games as a plug-n-play addition for the LA Rams to save their 2018 season and Super Bowl run.

Anderson has been frustrated with the lack of interest in him since he put up such impressive results for the Rams. He signed on with the Detroit Lions in 2019 but was released after just two games. He tried out for the Seattle Seahawks but was vocal about his disappointment when he failed to make their team. Just as the Seahawks had a role for Marshawn Lynch, the Rams could create a similar role for Anderson in 2020.  If the Rams could reach an agreement with him on a one-year deal, that would be a nice boost to the offense.
