When safety Eric Weddle announced his retirement, that decision to walk away from the game on his terms was likely based on the Rams’ tight finances as much as anything. After all, his 2019 season for the LA Rams was very productive, registering his highest number of tackles since 2014.

While his quality of play may have slipped over the years, his overall production still justifies putting him on the roster for an insurance policy against injury. Passes thrown against him were only 68.1 percent completed, a fairly respectable rate for safety.   But Weddle was active in the defense all year and was particularly valuable when safety John Johnson fell

Weddle continued to be a positive for on defense, earning a 69.0 defensive grade last season from Pro Football Focus and a 70.5 coverage grade. While the Rams likely have already decided to promote Taylor Rapp and John Johnson as 2020 starting safeties, he is productive enough to rotate in for about 300-400 defensive snaps in 2020 and provide reliable pass coverage at safety.

In the topsy-turvy world of 2020, these five retired players could be the right additions to ground the team in an uncertain season and continue to give younger players the proper perspective. In a season where rookies must video conference players, meetings must stick to scripts and schedules to ensure all meetings take place timely, rookies may not have enough access to coaches and the limited number of veteran players.  Adding just one more veteran could pay big dividends this season.
