Why Newton would consent to this deal?

Just as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers were able to lure former Patriots quarterback Tom Brady to Tampa Bay with elite receivers, so too would 6-foot-5 245-pound Cam Newton enjoy a revival to his career by throwing to the LA Rams stable of receivers.  The Rams not only have a pair of 1,000-yard receivers in Robert Woods and Cooper Kupp, but they will also likely promote speedy WR Josh Reynold, feature two tight ends Tyler Higbee and Gerald Everett, and boast two rookie targets in Van Jefferson and Brycen Hopkins.

Cam Newton needs a chance, and the Rams could be one of the few teams left with a legitimate chance to shine for the veteran quarterback. Starting quarterback Jared Goff has started in 47 of the last 48 games for the LA Rams. With a shaky offensive line from 2019, even a healthy version in 2020 comes with a risk for a stationary pocket-presser.

Newton’s phone will ring soon

Nobody is knocking down Newton’s door, today. But now that the New York Jets have signed veteran Joe Flacco to an inexpensive one-year contract, how long will it be before his agent’s phone starts ringing?  I expect NFL teams will begin to make that phone call as soon as Monday, May 25th. As soon as that phone starts to ring, his price will go up.

The LA Rams haven’t the funds to enter a bidding war. But a shrewdly place contract offer today could be well-timed, and that offer could land the LA Rams one of the best free-agent quarterbacks available in 2020. Jared Goff is the starter.  But if the Rams need to send in a backup, I would feel better if Cam Newton’s number was called.  Newton is one of the premier dual-threat quarterbacks in the NFL.  Since the LA Rams have already begun to flirt with that style of play, they might as well go all-in on the gamble. Imagine Sean McVay’s offense erupting with Cam Newton under center? Time for the Rams to make the offer, but this opportunity will vanish quickly.
