Will LA Rams Everett or Higbee be an NFL top-5 TE?
By Bret Stuter
The case for Tyler Higbee
Tyler Higbee was the first Rams tight end to drink from the well of good fortune in 2019. But his talents were obvious even from 2018. Higbee was drafted a year earlier than Everett and truly had not had much of the focus on offense. Even still, his talents stood out in the few opportunities that came his way.
Right place, wrong time
Higbee benefitted a great deal from the LA Rams reformulating of the offense. He also benefitted greatly from the injury to his teammate, Gerald Everett. In fact, it was nearly simultaneous that Everett fell when the Rams decided to go two tight-end sets or 12 personnel. From that point, Higbee was the receiver few defenses accounted for, and that proved to be their fatal flaw.
He put up tremendous numbers in December 2019 and could have gone on to become one of the NFL’s leading receivers at the pace he was on. Unfortunately, the season ran out before his momentum did. Even so, now that the Rams know what he can do on offense, it will be simply a matter of adjusting plays to ensure he can continue to put up similar numbers in 2020. Have the Rams found their third thousand-yard receiver on offense?
