Dallas home opener

The LA Rams open the season with the Dallas Cowboy. While that is a huge game for many reasons, one of the most subtle yet important elements of that game is the right of claiming Los Angeles as “home turf”.  While there are many Cowboys fans in the area, can they truly claim that SoFi Stadium is the equivalent of a home game for the Cowboys?

In fact, many articles predicting the demise of the LA Rams 2020 season have ridiculed that opening contest, asserting that the Dallas Cowboys are a more popular team in southern California. Is that truly the case? Will Los Angeles fans truly cheer more loudly for a visiting team than their own Rams?  That’s something we’ll be monitoring.

Cowboys kings of NFL marketing

When the NFL abandoned Los Angeles from 1995-2015, the Dallas Cowboys detected an opportunity to expand their market. And so, moving the summer training camp out of the Texas heat and into one of the most populated areas of the United States was a shrewd move. So they began to train in the area since 2012, eager to build a fanbase in LA. And it worked.

"““We’ve got thousands of fans that are generational there in Los Angeles,” Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones told 105.3 The Fan in Dallas"

That’s quite a statement by the owner of a visiting team.  The interview goes on to indicate that the Cowboys are quite comfortable whenever they play in Los Angeles.  And so, playing at Los Angeles is friendly turf for the Cowboys. Or is it?
