Select Jared Goff over Jimmy Garoppolo

The San Francisco 49ers pulled a massive deal by obtaining then New England quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo from the Patriots. However, Garoppolo has only played a full season once in his six NFL seasons. He played well in 2019, the best complete season in his career.

Garoppolo led the 49ers to their seventh Super Bowl appearance. He and Goff have played for the Lombardi Trophy in their successive seasons. Neither quarterback was able to win a ring.

Last season, Garoppolo completed 329 passes for 3,978 yards with 27 touchdowns. He had less passing yards than Goff but had five more touchdown passes. Most of all, he had 660 fewer yards than Goff because San Francisco had a better offensive line as well as a better rushing attack than the Rams.

Comparison-shopping

Let’s take a closer look at Garoppolo’s passing numbers. He averaged 5.5 yards per reception before yards after the catch. In other words, he threw five-yard passes with receivers making big plays after the catch. Can you say, tight-end George Kittle?

The tight end position probably explains the difference in Goff’s touchdown passes (22) to Garoppolo’s (27). Perhaps selecting Garoppolo and Kittle in your draft, is why you may be tempted to select him before choosing Jared Goff. Don’t forget, the LA Rams have improved its rushing attack with the draft selection of rookie running back Cam Akers.
