Gerald Everett

The LA Rams had featured both Tyler Higbee and Gerald Everett in the offense for the past several years. But when Everett fell to injury and the Rams were forced to make use of a different talent-set of Johnny Mundt, things began to fall into place. And the curious fact is that while Tyler Higbee tore up NFL defenses in December 2019, Gerald Everett was pretty much a non-factor even after Everett returned to the lineup.

Higbee and Goff clicked in a way that the Rams had not witnessed between a quarterback and a tight end for some time. And while Gerald Everett is just as talented as his teammate, it was Higbee that blew the lid off when the Rams needed a player to step up and deliver. And that was after Higbee had already signed a pretty lucrative deal with the Rams.  Now, Gerald Everett is in his contract year and is playing for the opportunity to return to the Rams or to sign on with a new team in 2021.

Cause McVay said so

One thing working in Everett’s favor is that he already has the attention of his head coach Sean McVay. In fact, it was McVay himself who had taken responsibility for Everett’s stagnancy in the offense, while Higbee seemed to break out in the final month of the 2019 season. In his discussion about the tight end position, McVay emphasized that he must take a stronger lead in getting Everett involved in the offense.

That is easier said than done.  It’s hard to push Higbee’s success to the back burner in the hope of striking similar success with Everett in the offense this season.  Meanwhile, the Rams went out and drafted tight end Brycen Hopkins, a tight end who is very likely to end up in a 2020 highlight film for his circus catches. It all adds up to more hands reaching out to catching the one football in the game. While Everett certainly has all the talent to play incredibly well, he needs to make it happen in 2020.  If he fails to rack up the yardage this year, the Rams have his heir apparent on the roster to take over next year in his place. Now for the running game and veteran runner Malcolm Brown.
