Inside linebacker

When the LA Rams traded for inside linebacker Kenny Young, many thought he would be inserted into the starting defensive lineup pretty quickly. After all, he had plenty of starts for the Baltimore Ravens over two seasons, and he had performed well enough, if not exceptionally, in those spot starts.  So it was a bit surprising to fans when he arrived at the Rams and never saw a defensive snap. None. Nada.

So far, we’ve rationalized that by applying the Rams standard of benching newcomers for a season.  That allows the team to ensure players who take the field know the Rams plays, players, coaches, and expectations.  But there are other reasons that can be just as logical. What if Kenny Young is simply not a good fit for the team?

Caveat Emptor

The Rams added Ravens linebacker Kenny Young as a way to balance out the perceived value of the Marcus Peters trade. But it’s very curious, surprising, perhaps even disappointing, that Young did not see any action on defense. If he had, the Rams would be in much better shape for 2020 at the linebacker position. A competitive Young and a healthy Micah Kiser would be the logical choice to open the 2020 NFL season as the starters. Even now, they make the most sense.

But the Rams didn’t put Young in there last season, and that could mean the Rams don’t do so this season either. After all, the Rams did add an inside linebacker to the roster via the 2020 NFL Draft when the team selected Baylor’s linebacker, Clay Johnston. Despite coming off an ACL injury, Johnston has all the makings of a surprise starter in 2020. And if he lands a promotion to the starter, some player will be conversely demoted.  Young risks being that player.
