NFL Power Rankings 2020 preseason: Where do LA Rams fall?
By Bret Stuter
Team 21 – New York Jets (7-9)
There may come a day when Sam Darnold proves all doubters and nay-sayers that he is truly one of the better NFL quarterbacks, but it is not this season. The Jets did not win on the arm of Sam Darnold but on a stymying defense and an adequate running game. In fact, the Jets had the worst offense in the NFL. And that includes 13 games of their starting QB.
2019 summary
The Jets offense remains bad. They love quarterback Sam Darnold, and I don’t. As long as their team has a great defense, they’ll win some games. But the wheels are falling off the Jets wagon just as they have from the Jaguars’ wagon over recent years.
Players lost
The Jets lost 25 players from the 2019 roster, some of the more noteworthy are WR Robby Anderson, OT Brandon Shell, OG Tom Compton, CB Darryl Roberts, and OLB Brandon Copeland.
Players added
The Jets added OT George Fant, OG Greg Van Roten, C Conner McGovern, WR Breshad Perriman, CB Pierre Desir, QB Joe Flacco, RB Frank Gore, ILB Patrick Unwuasor, and C Josh Andrews. They will be joined by rookies WR Denzel Mims, OT Mekhi Becton, S Ashtyn Davis, Edge Jabari Zuniga, and RB La’Michal Perrine.
2020 outlook
The Jets ended the 2019 season at 7-9 and could do better than that in 2020, particularly if they can win more than half of their AFC East games. They’ve certainly added a ton of OL depth to sort through this training camp. But until Darnold proves he can pass the ball over 4000 yards and has a better than two for one TD to INT ratio, defenses can sit on the running game and wait for Darnold’s mistakes. Again.
