Team 14 – Dallas Cowboys (8-8)

Despite the ringing cries of the nation that the Dallas Cowboys won the draft, so this will be their year, their draft did not really address the team needs. The worst thing that could have happened to the 8-8 Dallas cowboys happened, everyone is giving the entire organization a standing ovation before a single snap.

2019 summary

The Dallas Cowboys were the NFL’s underachiever winner from 2019. A team that was loaded with talent on offense, and had enough on defense to win games, didn’t win the games they needed to. So the ownership cleaned house and hired a new head coach.  Suddenly the Rams are in Super Bowl conversations? I’m not convinced the team is any better in 2020, as the team must reacquaint itself with the coaching staff. If the Dallas Cowboys could only finish 8-8 with so much talent and continuity in 2019, their 2020 ceiling is not much higher.

8-8. Previous: 16th. Dallas Cowboys. 14. team. 123.

Players lost

The Dallas Cowboys lost edge rusher Robert Quinn, CB Byron Jones, TE Jason Witten, and WR Randall Cobb as part of 13 players who found work on other teams, plus nine players that remain unsigned. Finally, C Travis Frederick retired after just seven NFL seasons.

Players added

The Cowboys did add DL Gerald McCoy, K Greg Zuerlein, S Haha Clinton-Dix, and QB Andy Dalton in free agency, and then had a flashy draft that some folks are still talking about where the team added WR CeeDee Lamb, DT Neville Gallimore, C Tyler Biadasz, and edge rusher Bradlee Anae.

2020 outlook

If hype could win championships, the Dallas Cowboys would be assured a spot in the Super Bowl. But the Cowboys are coming off an 8-8 season, have a new coaching staff, a new center (perhaps a rookie?) handing off to the quarterback, and the expectations are already set to show up and be handed an invitation to the playoffs. I like the players added in the draft, but they will not be the huge factor everyone expects them to be this season. Yes, Dallas will score points. But that defense will surrender a lot of points too.
