NFL Power Rankings 2020 preseason: Where do LA Rams fall?
By Bret Stuter
Team 28 – New York Giants (4-12)
The New York Giants are one of the teams that had an underestimated off-season. I like their new head coach, and I think adding former division rival head coach Jason Garrett as the offensive coordinator was a solid move. Even if the Giants split their NFC East games, that’s a far cry better than a season ago.
2019 summary
The New York Giants have some talented players on offense but have a true love/hate relationship with general manager Dave Gettleman. That creates overreaction to any player added or released. And so, it becomes an even more complicated challenge to track the team from a distance, since a consensus of team actions is virtually impossible to determine.
Players lost
The New York Giants parted ways with 27 free agents, only six of whom have been signed by other teams. Some minor contracts were OT Mike Remmers, S Michael Thomas, and WR Corey Coleman.
Players added
The Giants were aggressive in free agency, adding CB James Bradberry, ILB Blake Martinez, TE Levine Tolollo, OLB Kyler Fackrell, OT Cameron Fleming, QB Colt McCoy, S Nate Ebner, and RB Dion Lewis. They then drafted OT Andrew Thomas, S Xavier McKinney, OT Matthew Peart, G Shane Lemieux.
2020 outlook
The NY Giants may not come out of the gates very hot in 2020, After all, the team failed to add any receivers in the draft despite the talent being there through all seven rounds. That’s not much of a warm reception to new offensive coordinator Jason Garrett. The Giants seem to focus upon a running offense and a stalwart defense. Will that work in the modern NFL? I like the strategy long term, but not so much short term. Giants fail to improve much.
