Quarantine quarterback

It is this thought-exercise which triggered the concept of a quarantine quarterback.  The concept is that if an NFL team’s quarterback contracted the disease, he would be lost to the team for a significant period of time while the COViD-19 protocol is in effect.  Similar to the concussion protocol, a player who tested positive would be required to remain in isolation until he tests negative, which is at minimum a period of ten days without symptoms. Recovery periods vary and could lead to an NFL team doing without their quarterback for a significant part of the season.

Other scenarios that the NFL could implement would be to place a team’s roster into segregated squads.  In this scenario, a team would create separate practices for smaller groups of the overall team roster.  That would create some distancing partitions among players on the same team should anyone test positive.

Does anything go?

In the end, the concept of playing football in a social distancing environment is an oxymoron. Either the rules of social distancing are waived for football players, or players accept the risks of contracting a highly infectious disease.

This is really hard for all of us to understand, Coach McVay. Right now, the NFL is pushing ahead with the hope that a cure and containment will minimize the risks to an NFL season.  But even in empty stadiums, risks will exist. Right now, it’s up to the NFL to minimize those risks as much as possible.
