Scorched earth strategy

The worst option for the Rams is to slash the roster until they get to Ramsey’s number. Of course, that does not mean marginal players, but true contributors.  That could spell disaster for Rams veterans in 2020 as players like Rob Havenstein, Malcolm Brown, Josh Reynolds, Brian Allen, Greg Gaines, and more would all be immediately placed onto the bubble.

A better strategy would be for the Rams to launch a series of trades to free up cap space. While that would mean the loss of fewer players, it still would cut some key contributors from this year’s roster. But trades usually happen as isolated incidents. As soon as anyone catches on that the Rams are trying to shed cap space, the market disappears. A better solution?

Rework Goff contract

No. We are not talking about accounting tricks of converting one type of contract compensation into another one. We’re talking the full-monty here. Rework Goff’s contract. Goff’s current contract is $50 million guaranteed, loaded with incredible roster bonuses, and consumes over 10 percent of the Rams salary cap over the next five years.

Since the salary cap will drop by 25 percent next year, the Rams must pull out $10 million of Goff’s salary cap hit next season. Since he underperformed in 2019, it is up to him to demonstrate the leadership needed to create enough cap space to give the Rams enough space to retain Ramsey. We’ve already worked how the Rams can structure Ramsey’s contract to make him the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL while squeezing everything into the Rams’ tight financial limits.

If the Rams fail to get that contract hammered out and signed this year, they don’t stand much of a chance in 2021. The hype and hoopla of signing a mega-deal will be far too tempting for Ramsey to stay put and wait for the Rams to work a deal. As many as 12 NFL teams are waiting at the end of the rainbow with a pot of gold with Ramsey’s name on it.  The Rams need to sign Jalen Ramsey to a new contract now so that never happens.
