The LA Rams roster is now 80 players. But when OLB Terrell Lewis is reactivated, that will mean that the Rams will need to waive one more player
The LA Rams trimmed the roster to get to the 80-man limit with two separate waves of cuts, one player opting-out, and one player assigned to the COVID-19 reserve list. The first wave was announced on July 25, 2020, when the Rams announced that they waived safety Jake Gervase, tight end Ethan Wolf, receiver Greg Dortch and center Nate Trewyn. The second wave was announced on August 1, 2020, when the Rams announced that they waived LB Daniel Bituli, RB James Gilbert, DT Sam Renner, and DE Greg Reaves.
That freed up eight roster spots. One more roster spot opened when OL Chandler Brewer opted out on July 31, 2020. On that same day, another roster spot opened up when the team assigned OLB Terrell Lewis to the COVID-19 reserve list 90 players cut to 80. So far, the numbers add up, right?
Back to 81?
Er, maybe? After all, the Rams will return OLB Terrell Lewis to the active roster at some point. In order to do that, the team will need to create a roster spot for him. When will that be? It could be as soon as this week, as he was assigned to the reserve list seven days ago. So that means the Rams will be trimming a player once more. But who?
Ideally, the team is using the time wisely – particularly in assessing the trio of potential field goal kickers. If the Rams could make that competition a two-man race, that would be the ideal situation going forward. But what should fans expect?
Bubble trouble
Whenever the team needs to waive a player, folks talk about bubble players. That designation came about because, much like a soap bubble, the roster spot can pop and that player is no longer on the team. We created a list of eight players who are on a potential bubble.
This roster cut will very likely be the last cut before the team must trim the roster to 53 men for the season. Whoever this player might be, they will likely not be added to the team’s practice squad. Meanwhile, it’s important for the Rams to get rookie Terrell Lewis activated as soon as it is safe to do so. That’s because there simply is no room for “make-up” time in this schedule. And as soon as the Rams welcome Lewis back, the joy will quickly become bittersweet at the team will be saying farewell to another player.
