In LA Rams News: The team announced today that they have assigned NT A’Shawn Robinson to the Active/Non-Football Injury list per Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic

In the latest LA Rams News: The team is just one week into a very aggressively scheduled training camp, and the defense is already taking hits from the projected ranks of the starters.  The first impacted player is rookie OLB Terrell Lewis, who had been assigned to the COVID-19 reserve list on August 1st.  Now the second player is benched, projected starting nose tackle A’Shawn Robinson.

On August 8, 2020, the LA Rams have reportedly announced that NT A’Shawn Robinson has been placed on the Active/Non-Football injury list.

While there are no further details about Robinson’s specific case, we do know that this is the response to a player who has suffered an injury that occurred outside of the team’s official activities.  To put this into perspective, the Indianapolis Colts had used a similar designation when the team discovered that wide receiver T.Y. Hilton had suffered a hamstring injury sustained working out at home.

Robinson reinforces Rams defensive line

This designation allows the team to reactivate Robinson immediately after clearing whatever issue triggered this transaction.

The Rams signed Robinson to a two-year, $17 million contract as a free agent in March 2020. At that time, he was signed to fill the void of outgoing free agent Michael Brockers. The Rams subsequently re-signed Brockers after his deal with the Baltimore  Ravens fell through.

Robinson is leaving the Detroit Lions, where he had played his first four NFL seasons. The Lions selected him in the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft.

Robinson, 25, had played in 58 games for the Lions and started 37 games. He recorded 172 tackles and five sacks over that time. In 2019,  he appeared in 13 games making 40 tackles and 1.5 sacks.

Robinson projects as the starting nose tackle for the Rams in 2020. That allows the team to move both Aaron Donald and Michael Brockers to defensive end, where they can be more effective.  Robinson is a powerful, big defensive lineman who is expected to have a similar “collateral effect” similar to the one enjoyed by signing free agent Ndamukong Suh.  If you recall, while Suh’s direct numbers were modest, he propelled teammate Aaron Donald to career-high numbers.  Hopefully, this will be a minor delay in Robinson’s training for this season.
