LA Rams COO Kevin Demoff hinted that CB Jalen Ramsey was house hunting, warming hopes of re-signing him to long=term extension

The LA Rams won’t discuss it, and neither with Jalen Ramsey. But the hopes of re-signing the All-Pro cornerback is getting warmer as the signs continue to point in that direction. We remain very optimistic. While I can’t point to the path of how the team will make the numbers work, there are many options to doing so.

The Rams committed to extending CB Jalen Ramsey the moment they put up two first-round picks plus a fourth-round pick. That amount of investment is not a rental, but the purchase price.

Meanwhile, the LA Rams are planning a defense to specifically feature the talents of Ramsy. Not just any ole “line-them-up-and-let’s-go” sort of defense. The design is to feature Ramsey in such a way that the opposing quarterback is confused.  Line up Ramsey in the slot, but give him primary outside coverage. Set up the defense as zone, but give Ramsey man-press responsibilities.

Quarterbacks will do everything they can to avoid throwing AT Ramsey. So without video footage, we can presume the design is to show Ramsey as something he isn’t while deploying him in a way he isn’t displayed.

Keep in mind that the Rams have never had both John Johnson and Jalen Ramsey on the football field at the same time. Toss in the rise of second-year safety Taylor Rapp and the presence of undervalued Troy Hill and secondary has the potential to lead the league in pass defense.

All starters, yet never taking the field together? A bit of something old and something new blended into a formidable group to face.  And that’s just the secondary.

Of course, it’s all relative.  By next year at this time, the Rams will have expired contracts for both John Johnson and Ramsey (if not extended). The Rams must also re-sign Troy Hill, Darious Williams, and Donte Deayon.

On second thought, perhaps there is more drama to the 2020 NFL season. Perhaps the real question is not when will the Rams extend Jalen Ramsey, but rather who will be playing in the secondary with him next season.
