The LA Rams training camp is already filled with Ram veteran wide receivers schooling rookie defensive backs

The LA Rams are not holding any punches when it comes to the Rams training camp. You see, there’s no time for gentleness, or easing the way for rookies who hope to make an impact this season. There is only their controlled competition. Drilling plays over and over to ensure that each player brings out the best in the other.

Of course, when one player is a seasoned veteran wide receiver named Robert Woods and the other is a rookie defensive back Terrell Burgess who is lining up for the Rams for the first time, you can guess the outcome. But this is professional football, a game for adult men. There are no participation awards. And Woods did not take it easy on Burgess in the least.

But Burgess was closer in coverage than expected. That’s a very good sign.

So goes another Rams drill at training camp. One player gets the upper-hand, while the other player learns a rather valuable lesson.

Quality begets quality

The Rams, like all NFL teams, will compete against themselves in training camp until the season opens. So the level of the secondary will depend heavily upon the level of the team’s receivers, and vice versa.  Competition creates the best in a player when that player is competing against the best. We know that the LA Rams secondary is loaded with talent this season.  In the same breath, we know that the LA Rams receivers are loaded with talent as well.

Each side will push the other in the Rams training camp. That’s an efficient competition.

Some teams will not be as fortunate. If either the receivers or secondary are not as talented, training camp will discourage the lesser talented group but will build false confidence in the more talented squad. That’s one of the unspoken downsides to no preseason games. Coaches are literally blind as to where the team is weak and can be exploited until true game footage illuminates the cracks in their plans.

More than ever, 2020 will be won by endurance, coaching, depth, talent.  In that environment, I like the Rams chances. How about you?
