LA Rams WR Van Jefferson is scratching his way to the surface of the depth chart in training camp

It’s said that you can’t keep a good man down. So how long can the LA Rams keep rookie WR Van Jefferson buried in the depth chart?  While that may not be a very fair question this early in training camp, it’s one that will pop up again and again. After all, the keys to a rookie rising in the team’s depth chart are: show up prepared to play at every practice, demonstrate clear fundamentals of scheme and plays, make most of your opportunities.

The Rams are not as “needy” for immediate rookie production as some teams. But it would be nice to see. After all, the team needs someone to step up at running back. The team needs players to make the most of their opportunities in the passing game. The team needs reinforcements on defense. Even special teams need a new kicker. And many player contracts expire in 2021.

Pour me another 2020 draft, please!

The Rams needed to do well in the 2020 NFL Draft. But the potential of the LA Rams 2020 draft class is about as high as any drafts to date.  The team has an outstanding running back in Cam Akers. There there is outside linebacker Terrell Lewis who is one of the most athletically gifted players on the team. The team picked up a pair of defensive backs who are already making plays in training camp.

In the later rounds, the Rams added a rookie offensive tackle who is already getting looks at left tackle to back up Andrew Whitworth. The team found a kicker who, so far, is reportedly dead-on accurate with his kicks. The team has a lot of depth right now, but the addition of both a tight end and a linebacker was clearly the Rams investing today for players tomorrow. And then, there is that wide receiver selected with the team’s 57th pick of the 2020 NFL Draft, WR Van Jefferson. Why that pick baffled some, it was a promising choice. Here’s why:
