LA Rams cut Josh Love precursor to re-signing Blake Bortles?
By Bret Stuter
The LA Rams defy logic by trimming quarterbacks to three. Is this a precursor to the Rams bringing back free agent Blake Bortles?
The LA Rams are not exactly a classic textbook example of roster building. The team has enjoyed success at finding contributors from small-school football programs, and Pro Bowlers from the ranks of undrafted players. It’s a fun and thrilling way to build a roster. Never a dull moment. Never a discernable pattern.
A very artistic and expressive way to add talent to an NFL team roster, if you will. Oh, but don’t let the unorthodox methods fool you. The LA Rams are very skilled at determining the value of a player’s talent. Not only does the team seem to find diamonds in the NFL Draft, but the team seems to know when to walk away.
What’s stirring with LA Rams QB room?
The LA Rams made a pretty shocking announcement today when the team announced that they were waiving undrafted rookie quarterback Josh Love. While Love was not expected to deliver more than a chance for the practice squad, he did deliver some competition to the team.
Now, with just three quarterbacks on the roster, there is a question as to whether the team will even carry a quarterback on the practice squad? After all, we’ve witnessed that injuries can occur with the rapid rate of injuries reported already in the NFL. And we know that a positive test for COVID-19 can result in a player quarantined for up to two weeks as symptoms clear and tests come back negative.
Strength in numbers
The risks to the Rams of carrying just three quarterbacks on the roster at this point in training camp seem to outweigh the rewards. So where could the team find a quarterback who could even help out on the practice squad? What about a former Rams player who is now a free agent?
While we are not suggesting that the Rams would supplant either John Wolford or Bryce Perkins, we do believe that the Rams will need more numbers to ensure the team is not scrambling to add a quarterback in mid-season. That logic would then lead to the conclusion that the Rams need to add someone now. The only option that fits the Rams spec sheet is veteran Blake Bortles at this point.
Will Blake Bortles sign for the league minimum? That may be why the Rams haven’t signed him up yet. But I think ultimately he will do so. The Rams would be wise to add him, even if just to park him on the practice squad.
