3 losers
While the tradition of using winners and losers is deep-rooted, this category should be more along the lines of “cause for concern”. After all, an NFL scrimmage is not designed to expose pretenders as much as it’s an opportunity to learn and grow. So if we called this category “learning opportunities”, would it mean as much to you? Probably not.
Rob Havenstein
Edge rusher Leonard Floyd had great success pressuring the quarterback from the left. The counter to Leonard Floyd’s big day from the left edge is right tackle Rob Havenstein’s questionable performance. Was it just another bad day for the big offensive right tackle? Or was something else at work here? I understand that the 30-day crash course will put offensive lines at a disadvantage heading into the NFL season. If the Rams need to help, they need to go 12-package, pronto.
So long Sloman?
The LA Rams believed enough in Miami of Ohio kicker Sam Sloman, they used a draft pick to ensure he would try out for the team’s kicking role. As the kicking competition goes, rookie Sam Sloman does not appear to be a serious contender any longer. Drafted or not, Sloman has usually ended up in the kicker competition in third place among three competitors. That does not mean his football career is kaput. Merely that he will likely need to reload and try again down the road.
Not long for this world
Cornerback David Long Jr. is the ‘other guy’ when it comes to discussing the LA Rams secondary. He is a defensive back who is making a strong push for a slot cornerback role for the team. He’s very good in coverage, despite getting burned by teammate Van Jefferson
It’s hard to single out Long as a “loser” as the Rams had a series of good offensive drives. But as good of a play he made, Van Jefferson made one that much better.
