LA Rams sign Daniel Bituli and Derrick Moncrief in nick of time
By Bret Stuter
The LA Rams bolstered the linebacker ranks by re-signing a rookie and adding an ex-CFL star from the NFL Free Agency market in the nick of time.
Days before the LA Rams lost projected inside linebacker starter Travin Howard for the 2020 NFL season, the team was already acting to fill the linebacker room with more bodies. It isn’t that the team is lacking players, they have five active players. It wasn’t as though the team is lacking talent, despite not drafting a linebacker, the team added three talented players after the NFL Draft. It’s not as though the team lacked experience.
Wait, there it is. The LA Rams lack NFL experience. That’s not easy to replace cheaply. Nor is it something that is easy to find and fit into the current roster and scheme at this late date with the NFL season starting in under 10 days. NFL Free Agency is a source for veterans who have played in the NFL. But nobody has played in defensive coordinator Brandon Staly’s defense before.
Two-fer
The Rams did reach into the NFL Free Agency market and cam up with two linebackers they feel may help out the team’s situation at this late hour. With the team down to the wire, just how much impact can the team rely upon for any late additions to this roster? With so many vital free agents seeking a new contract for the LA Rams at the end of this season, do the Rams have enough resources to do more?
Perhaps and perhaps not. Since we are still a bit foggy on what the Rams defense will use in terms of two inside linebackers in terms of defense packages, is that the best use of limited resources? If the Rams defense will end the season having played 60 percent of the defensive snaps with an extra defensive back, then the Rams will likely stand pat on who they have. Well, the Rams do now have Daniel Bituli once more, and Derrick Moncrief. Who are they?
