Why free agent ILB Davis could be a key pre-season signing by the LA Rams

Why free agent ILB Todd Davis could be a key pre-season signing by the LA Rams, and why that matters
The LA Rams are not satisfied with their linebackers yet. But things come at you fast in the NFL. Take today for example. The Rams entered today with a number of questions over the quality at inside linebacker. But with one key signing, the Rams starters could be set this year and would be a key launch point for a positive season.
The Rams have been through the virtual off-season and training camp. Even after all of that, the pecking order for the Rams seemed to result in a solid LB Micah Kiser performing at a far better level than the other competitors. Projected starter Travin Howard fell to a season-ending injury.
Help could be a FA signing away?
But even before the Rams lost Howard, the team was active, re-signing former rookie LB Daniel Bituli and ex-CFL LB Derrick Moncrief to help competition. That means that the Rams need help at linebacker. Perhaps the Rams can find some help today.
Broncos ILB Todd Davis knows Staley’s defense. He is a 6-foot-1 230-pound linebacker who had an incredible 2019. In the past two seasons, he played in 30 games, putting up 248 tackles, eight deflected passes, one pick-six, 12 tackles for losses. He has plenty of experience starting in a Brandon Staley like defense, and he is available.
This may not be a home run move. But the LA Rams only need a bunt single here. As soon as the Rams solidify the starters, they have the flexibility to develop all other linebackers, rotating them into the defense when they earn snaps.
