RB Cam Akers – (Florida State Rookie)
When the Rams let featured running back Todd Gurley go, the star running back taken in the first round in 2015, everyone knew that they needed a new featured running back to fill the void. As soon as the Rams selected Florida State RB Cam Akers with the 52nd pick of the 2020 NFL Draft, everyone knew that he was about to be the man in Los Angeles. There was no doubt.
Between Malcolm Brown, a power back bruiser, and Darrell Henderson, a speedy utility back, Akers provides the most balance to the lineup when he enters the game. He was a five-star recruit coming out of high school, the number-one running back in the country that year. Akers went to Florida State and was never able to truly dominate because of a weak offensive line.
Just what the Rams needed
Akers shows good field vision and excellent balance. He ran a 4.47-second forty-yard dash at the 2020 NFL Scouting Combine this season and then benched 20-reps of 225-pounds. He’s a workhorse, a traditional running back who is built to handle a heavy workload. Akers is also an ample receiver and someone who can be used in that aspect of the game.
While veteran RB Brown has been the guy before whenever Gurley was hurt, Henderson has yet to really make an impact on the Rams roster. I don’t believe he will quite be ready to get his chance yet, and it will be because of Akers. And Cam Akers is ready.
