As the LA Rams receivers flood their routes, the Bills have no one who can cover WR Reynolds

The LA Rams offense is a chameleon. The Rams can send two tight ends onto the field, chip away by blocking both edge rushers, and then simply throwing to the open seam route. The Rams can line up a running back to plug the A-gap blitzes, and then slip through the line to catch the ball from the spot the linebacker vacated. But perhaps most dangerous is the LA Rams three wide-receiver offense, the 11-package.  The Rams can send out any combination of Robert Woods, Cooper Kupp, Josh Reynolds, and Van Jefferson. Facing Buffalo, no Bills defender can cover Reynolds.

Against the Miami Dolphins, the Bills allowed four different receivers to catch five or more passes. The gave up eight of 11 catches to tight end Mike Gesicki, seven of nine completions to wide receiver Isaiah Ford,  and five of eight completions to wide receiver Devante Parker. The final Dolphins player who caught five passes? Running back Myles Gaskin.

Weapon X

The LA Rams can hurt the Bills defense is much the same way. And Josh Reynolds is Weapon X in this one. After all, the Bills know that Cooper Kupp can hurt them. They’ve seen Robert Woods put up 100 yards against the Dallas Cowboys. They’ve even witnessed tight end Tyler Higbee have a three-touchdown game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

But they haven’t noticed that Josh Reynolds is suddenly catching the balls thrown his way. He was one for one in the first game. He was two of two for the second game. That progression suggests that he will go three of three in this one. And the fun part of it all? He’s averaging 17 yards per catch. A 50 percent career completion rate is suddenly at 100 percent? He will get some looks this week.

Big game for big Josh Reynolds

Secondaries all have that one weakness. Perhaps its the defensive back who bites on the double fake. Perhaps is the defensive back who struggles to cover fast receivers, or cannot defend tall receivers. 6-foot-3 196-pound Reynolds is a big fast target who is already on pace for a career season.  That pace continues this week.

Reynolds’s 100 percent completion rate is not the only career high. His average of 17 yards per reception and per target are also career highs as well. While three targets may not seem like much, it’s just enough action in this offense to keep the receiver hot while keeping him just under the radar for a big game like this. The Rams will push the Bills’ defense today. Look for Goff to look for Reynolds. When he finds him, Weapon X will be unleashed.
