8 edge rushes from NFL free agency the LA Rams should invite for tryouts

The LA Rams are leaning heavily into DT Aaron Donald to pressure the quarterback. If you haven’t thought it, you’ve read it. This is a defense that has historically needed to get to the quarterback to prevent having all day to throw,  Of course, there will be games where the pass rush simply does not live up to expectations. And then there are times where the pass rush exceeds all hopes.  Those tend to happen in each NFL season.

The 2020 NFL season is just concluding week three. The LA Rams have two pass rushers who are among the NFL’s sack leaders: defensive lineman Aaron Donald and outside linebacker Leonard Floyd.  From the Rams’ entire roster, the only other two players who have brought a quarterback to the ground are defensive lineman Michael Brockers and defensive end Morgan Fox.  In three games, the Rams have seven sacks. That’s on pace for 36 quarterback sacks, a far cry less than 2019’s total of 50.

Young players not stepping up

Younger players have not stepped up. That includes OLB Samson Ebukam (59 percent defensive snaps), Ogbonnia Okoronkwo (24 percent defensive snaps), and Jachai Polite (1 percent defensive snaps).


So far, rookie outside linebacker Terrell Lewis has been healing his knee, so the Rams are at a point where they need to consider roster moves. Of course, the team did call up Natrez Patrick from the practice squad, and the team did sign linebacker Justin Hollins from the Denver Broncos.

But the Rams are far too raw on the edges. It would be okay if the Rams were mixing veterans with younger players.  So far, the only player getting to the quarterback from the edge is veteran Leonard Floyd, who has two sacks. That’s a huge concern after three games. While it’s still early in the season, the lack of pressure from so many of the Rams young players suggests that it is time for the Rams to consider outside help.  So here are eight edge rushers that the Rams could consider:
