LA Rams: 3 takeaways from Sunday night loss to 49ers
By John Vogel
Is there a way that the Rams can settle down Jared Goff when he is rattled?
Jared Goff spent a good majority of the game rattled and was a good part of the reason why the Rams couldn’t move the football all night. The 49ers were able to score on their opening drive with a brilliant gameplan that put pressure on the Rams immediately. Unfortunately, that pressure seemed to fall on Goff, who looked very uncomfortable most of the night.
Goff missed his favorite receiver, Cooper Kupp, three times in the game, and Kupp dropped a difficult touchdown catch that he normally makes. Even with the drops that Goff suffered through with his team, he spent the majority of the game intimidated by the 49ers defense.
Goff forgot his training
Goff finished with 198 passing yards and two touchdowns but also had an interception (on fourth and goal) and compiled a 72.0 rating. Goff added a 10-yard run that was a crucial first down that kept the Rams’ first touchdown drive alive.
However, there were questionable play calls all throughout the game. The Rams continued to take deep shots down the field without connecting until the 44-yard touchdown strike to Josh Reynolds. I understand the need to show confidence in your quarterback, and the chance of drawing a pass interference down the field, but couldn’t you scheme some easier plays to get Goff back into the game mentally?
Instead, Robert Woods caught four of his ten targets for 29 yards. Cooper Kupp brought in three of his nine targets for 11 yards. The deep shots didn’t land and didn’t draw the pass interference. The Rams stayed behind.
