Round 2
Round 2- Pick 55. With the 55th pick of the 2021 NFL Draft, the Los Angeles Rams select Asante Samuel Jr., cornerback, from Florida State. Will the Rams pick the son of former NFL great cornerback Asante Samuel? Well, if they are wise, they will. The LA Rams are staring down the barrel of losing both Darious Williams and Troy Hill to NFL Free Agency. Even if the Rams re-sign one, they will need help in the secondary.
The 5-foot-10 184-pound prospect knows his way around the secondary, and he is as natural as it comes when the ball is in the air. After all, he is the son of four-time Pro Bowler and All-Pro Asante Samuel. Is it genetics that gives Samuel Jr. the instinct to make the right play? It certainly could be argued that way once you see this young man play.
Plus and minus
As a college junior, Samuel Jr. will want to add some muscle to endure the physicality of the NFL. A nice playing weight would fall between 195-204 pounds, and he certainly has the right frame to get there. While Florida State is not the powerhouse it once was in the circles of NCAA Football programs, that’s no fault of Asante Samuel Jr.
His 2020 performance is already worthy of turning some heads. In three games, he has hauled in three interceptions, including two in the season opener against Georgia Tech. He is a solid and versatile defensive back, whose style is very similar to Rams standout cornerback Darious Williams. He is gold, and that type of play would look great in the LA Rams uniform.
