LA Rams TE Gerald Everett catches everything, except a break
By Bret Stuter
Will Rams rethink roster and Everett’s future?
While the Rams have plenty of offense built around both Higbee and Everett, the team’s needs at inside linebacker and other positions could force the Rams to rethink dedicating four roster spots to the tight end position. Tyler Higbee is a productive veteran on a long term contract. Johnny Mundt is a one-year blocking tight end. And Brycen Hopkins is a rookie tight end who has yet to take the field for the Rams. The only player with enough trade value worth discussing is Gerald Everett.
So who could be in the market for the Rams tight end? Well, the Philadelphia Eagles, the Buffalo Bills, the New England Patriots, the Cincinnati Bengals, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. All five teams are short in the position and could use a quality receiver/blocker in their roster right now. Unless the Buccaneers or Patriots make significant offers, the Rams would be unlikely to help them improve their roster prior to facing them later this season.
Different roles for different teams
The Philadelphia Eagle and Buffalo Bills are both chasing postseason, while the Cincinnati Bengals want to protect rookie quarterback Joe Burrow, as well as give him great targets. The Eagle situation is the most critical, and the Rams could pry two day-three picks out of the Eagles to get him onboard. The trade would look something like
So what might the Cincinnati Bengals offer?
In both cases, the Rams free up a roster spot, clear a bit of cap space, and pick up some badly needed draft picks in 2021. Their trade partner gets a quality tight end now on a cheap trial basis and gets an inside track on signing him to an extension for 2021 and beyond. If Everett does not sign, the new team has an opportunity for an awarded compensatory draft pick in 2022.
