The LA Rams choose Forbath over Sloman. Here are 3 reasons why it’s the right call

The LA Rams had to know that replacing an NFL kicker, particularly one with the reputation of Greg Zuerlein, would be a difficult task this offseason. And it was. But that task was even more complicated without the benefit of organized team activities (OTAs), a routing training camp, preseason games, and a lot of kicking in the process. That’s not how the 2020 NFL season panned out.

Instead, the LA Rams signed ex-CFL Alex MacGinnis, Lirim Hajrullahu, and drafted Sam Sloman. Three contestants for one position.  In two scrimmage games, the competition was a virtual dead heat between MacGinnis and Hajrullahu, with Sam Sloman a distant third place.  And yet, in some backroom meetings, the team selected Sloman to be the kicker for 2020.

And with that news, the LA Rams are now in the hands of veteran journeyman kicker Kai Forbath. But is this as much of a risk as you may think? Not likely. Forbath is a well-traveled booter who has been through the highs and lows of NFL kicking. Unfortunately for both the Rams and Sloman, that is a journey that Sloman is just not beginning.
