Seahawks

The Seattle Seahawks have gotten so much praise from the national NFL media, that at times I’ve had to rewind games they’ve played multiple times. Were they seeing the same games that I had viewed? I get it that the Seahawks have an incredibly talented offense, and score more points on average than any other team in the NFL.  So much so that they are nearly a full three points better than the next team.

But that defense is putrid.  The point spread between the best offense in the NFL and the defense is a mere 3.9 points. And they have not faced many good offenses. In fact, they have only faced two of the NFL’s top ten offenses. Still, they have managed to win purely from ‘shootouts’. So far, that’s led them to a 6-2 record.

Easy breezy schedule

These Seahawks have had an incredibly easy schedule so far.  With the exception of any early victory against the Miami Dolphins, Seattle has defeated sub-.500 teams so far this year. And with the exception of four games remaining against the NFC West, the Seahawks remaining schedule pits them against NFL teams with a combined record of 7-25-1. For comparison purposes, the Rams have one fewer non-division team on the schedule, and their combined record is 9-17.

It’s safe to conclude that the Rams cannot rely upon any help from another team when facing the Seahawks. But even if the Rams sweep Seattle, that will only drive the Seahawks to a 12-4 record. But Seattle does have a short week after facing the Rams, as they host the Cardinals on Thursday Night Football.

That places the game this weekend into perspective. If the Rams lose to the Seattle Seahawks, they fall to 0-2 in the division, the Seahawks take an almost insurmountable lead, and the Rams will be hard-pressed to recover in time to earn a playoff berth. If the Rams win this weekend, that sets up the Seahawks or the Cardinals for a must-win on a short week, while the Rams travel once more to the East Coast to take on the hungry Tampa Bay Buccaneers. After this Tuesday trip, it’s plain to see that this weekend’s game against the Seahawks is very important indeed.
