5 surprise LA Rams players key to TNF win over Patriots
By Bret Stuter
K Gay
While we are on the special teams performance of the LA Rams, we cannot overlook just how valuable kicker Matt Gay has become to the Rams already. Yes, he is the third kicker for the Rams. Yes, he is not perfect. But he’s truly what the Rams need in a place kicker. Unfortunately, Gay appeared on the Rams injury report on Wednesday with a shoulder injury, and lowered his game availability to questionable.
Despite appearing in just three games so far, kicker Matt Gay has been the best of the bunch. He is a perfect 10 for 10 on extra points, and a very respectable three of four for field goals of 40+ yards. The greatest need for the Rams in this one is kicking touchbacks.
Neutralize Patriots special teams
The Rams cover units are not in the habit of giving up big plays often. But just one big play changes the momentum, and is not something that this Rams team has a definable response for. If the game does become a defensive struggle, then pinning the Patriots on their side of the field becomes critical.
The Rams need to play error free football. That includes mental lapses on coverage, getting three points whenever they are within field goal range, and simply performing their expected roles. The Rams have not gotten dependable performances out of the kicking game all season, but have gotten much closer with Matt Gay than any other player.
