Even as the LA Rams face a season finale with backup QB John Wolford, the Arizona Cardinals are facing their own quarterback dilemma

The time for LA Rams backup quarterback John Wolford is now. With all of the pressure of a playoff game, Wolford becomes the hope and fears of the Rams entire NFL season focused on one game, the last of the season. This is a do-or-die nightmare for the Rams, who needed just one win in the last three games to clinch a playoff spot.

Not only did they fail to do so, but they have depleted their roster due to injuries in each of the last two games. Well, the Rams are not the only team fighting for a playoff spot as well as fighting off injuries. Today, the Arizona Cardinals announced their own battle with injuries. Starting quarterback Kyler Murray is nursing a lower leg injury, and that puts his availability for the last game of the season into question.

Will this be a battle of the backups?

Backup bowl

We’ve put out a lot of information about the LA Rams backup quarterback John Wolford in recent months. In fact, check out the articles listed below:

But we haven’t had reason to investigate the Cardinals’ backup. At least, until now. You see, there questions about Kyler Murray’s availability. But that’s something the Cardinals have talked about since November. Then it was a shoulder injury. Now it is Murray’s lower leg.   And just minutes into Tuesday, December 29, Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury added confusion to the mix over who is the Cardinals’ backup quarterback.

Will the real Cardinals backup please stand up?

Presumed QB Brett Hundley has been a healthy scratch for the Cardinals this year. The real McCoy is former CFL star Chris Streveler. He is the ex-CFL quarterback who had just won a Grey Cup championship while playing for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League. Streveler seemed to have won the Cardinals’ backup quarterback role from the start of the season.

Streveler is a 6-foot-1 215-pound quarterback who has just turned 25 and has never thrown a pass in the NFL. He did play in the Canadian Football League for two seasons with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, where he completed 242 of 374 passes for 2698 yards, 19 touchdowns, and 19 interceptions. He also rushed 204 times for 1167 yards and 22 touchdowns.  It’s easy to see why he became Murray’s backup because he can do what Murray does.

For the Rams defense, Streveler’s similar style to Murray won’t complicate their preparation. And so, the game may come down to a Backup Bowl. Chris Streveler to face John Wolford. In so many ways, that seems as fitting of an end to the 2020 NFL season as any.
