Bortles

Quarterback Blake Bortles is the most obvious choice for the Rams on many levels. For starters (pun intended), he is intimately knowledgeable with the LA Rams offense under head coach Sean McVay. In fact, beyond Jared Goff, he is the only quarterback to have thrown a pass for the Rams in the past two seasons.

So it makes sense for the Rams to make an effort to re-sign Bortles to come in as an emergency backup. At least that is what the Rams hope to do.

But there is that matter of job security.  This signing, while it will be to the Rams active 53-man roster, is a temporary position. So that will create some conflict. After all, the Broncos quarterback situation is not settled. Does Bortles perceive a better career opportunity to remain with the Broncos practice squad, with a chance to make the roster next year?

Also. Surgery was the only right choice for LA Rams QB Jared Goff. light

No better than Bortles

From the Rams perspective, there is no better plug-n-play quarterback than Blake Bortles. The Rams signed him to a one-year deal in 2019 and he became the team’s primary backup for that season. While he never was called up to start, he did see action in three games in 2019 for the Rams. The first appearance occurred in a mop-up outing against the Atlanta Falcons in October 2019.

He came in again against the Pittsburgh Steelers when Goff was shaken up on a play in November 2019. He was only in for one play and rushed for a one-yard gain.  His final appearance occurred in December 2019, when he once more came in in order to mop-up after the Rams jumped out to a substantial lead against the Atlanta Falcons. He completed one of two passes in that game. So while he is familiar enough with the Rams, his experience is almost entirely with the Jacksonville Jaguars. But if he won’t sign up, who else is available?
