3 reasons why the LA Rams may start Wolford in round one vs. Seahawks
By Bret Stuter
Wolford’s mobility
The Arizona Cardinals are the only team to have faced Rams quarterback John Wolford, and they lost. No, it was not a pretty win for the LA Rams. If the truth be known, it was a very ugly win. But it was the prettiest ugly win I’ve seen in some time. Still, as ugly as it was, it was never horrifying. It was simply a game where things did not always go well. But with the exception of the first pass off Wolford’s hand being intercepted by Cardinals linebacker Jordyn Hicks, the game as simply a struggle.
In the game, the Rams seemed to be in it. Even with an early deficit of 7-0, there was no panic, no horror, no experience of the bottom dropping out. As in experienced and new as Wolford was, he was mobile. He was mobile enough to evade the pass rush and make completions. And he was mobile enough to convert on third-down-and-long-distance into a first down. When Wolford is under center, the Rams offense can move the chains. By moving the chains, the defense stays fresh
One more week to heal
I understand that Rams starting quarterback will do whatever is asked of him. And with a competitive spirit, he may or may not be truthful when the team asks him if he can go this week. The reality is that the Rams should not ask him to do so. Yes, the Seattle Seahawks have a full roster on offense, and their defense is virtually at full strength. This game will be a huge challenge for the Rams.
But Wolford is not someone the Seahawks have faced before. As such, as long as Wolford plays well, the Rams can take advantage of the novelty of Wolford under center. And for each play that Wolford is under center, that is one fewer play where Jared Goff is getting tackled. Perhaps if Goff is marginally ready, the Rams could start Wolford for the first half, and bring in Goff for the second half. Anything to throw the Seahawks off their rhythm or game plan would be a positive.
Yes Jared Goff has played and won in post season. But he was given a chance to start. If Goff is not 100 percent healthy, then Wolford offers more than a placeholder. He too gives the Rams a chance to win. He simply offers a different way of doing so. And if he wins this one, then the Rams have a fully healed and rested Jared Goff to play in the next three games.
