What lies ahead for the LA Rams in these playoffs?

The fact that backup quarterback John Wolford’s neck injury was diagnosed as just a stinger may or may not allow Wolford to play this week. The fact is that Goff’s playing just days after surgery was not the best path to recovery either. So the Rams have two quarterbacks with questionable status for the game at the Green Bay Packers.

The reports of Wolford returning to the Rams locker room to celebrate the victory over the Seahawks with his teammates are telling. If nothing else, that is evidence that Wolford will be ready to go Saturday in Green Bay. But also telling is the fact that Jared Goff played three quarters for the Rams and did well enough to win the game. With an extra week of recuperation, the Rams will have a much better Goff to go against the Packers.

Run the damned ball, already

Goff is the veteran quarterback. Wolford is a more mobile quarterback who can force over-zealous defenses to overcommit to either the pass or the run, and make them pay the price. Whoever gets the nod in the Packers game will simply be the quarterback who is healthier. There are no subtle messages being sent, nor a change of the LA Rams offensive philosophy. It was quite clear in the Seattle Seahawks game that Goff was nowhere near 100 percent for that game.

Whoever is under center will still need the support of a strong running game. The Rams optimal offense runs with a featured running back who can rush for over 100 yards a game, as well as catch passes. The offense uses that strong running attack to fake runs with play-action, allowing the receivers to get separation and tack on plenty of additional yards after the catch.

This is not a pro-Goff perspective. Ultimately, the Rams are a pro-Goff organization. The Rams signed Goff to a lucrative multi-year deal to start at quarterback. That’s enough for me to support, particularly now as the Rams face a steep climb through the post-season. The Rams are three games away from hoisting a Lombardi Trophy. As long as the Rams commit to running the ball, I’m willing to withhold judgment.  Great things could be just around the corner. Let’s find out what that might be.
