In LA Rams  News: NFL teams want to duplicate the Rams recent success in free agency and the draft by poaching the Rams personnel department

The LA Rams had a very successful 2020 NFL Draft, and despite the lack of splash, were quietly excellent in the NFL Free Agent market as well. While we were able to sit back and smugly smile to ourselves as everything unfolded, the Rams restocked a porous roster with enough talent to return to the NFL Playoffs. That’s not easy to do.

In fact, it’s very rare. So rare that it has piqued the curiosity of other NFL teams who are eager to improve their overall talent with a bit of pruning, grafting, planting, and transplanting NFL talent in a similar style. While they could try to plot their own course of trial-and-error, many NFL teams aim for the shortcut of simply stealing scouting talent from successful teams.

Poaching underway

The trouble with trying to jump-start a poorly performing personnel department is that the same policies and tactics that resulted in the firing of the team’s general manager have become embedded so deeply in the staff that they will most like institute the same or too similar new approaches.

The tough part for any hiring of the general manager is the tremendous turnover of the team’s infrastructure that takes place afterward. The newly hired General Manager will need his own set of direct reports, will likely lead a hiring process of a new head coach and a new coaching staff, and must then work at lightning speed to evaluate the current players on the roster, and create affordable options from the upcoming NFL Free Agency market or the 2021 NFL Draft.
