The LA Rams have added veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford, at the expense (or relief) of trading away Jared Goff. But the Rams have not added real depth to the quarterback position. And no matter how you compare Stafford to Goff, the LA Rams have given one and gotten one. The Rams have a new starting quarterback, yes. But the entire quarterback room is filled with mobile quarterbacks.
Matthew Stafford is a pocket passer. He was a pocket passer. He will be a pocket passer. And his backups are all mobile quarterbacks?
So the Rams need to get out of that mobile quarterback phase, and quickly. Of course, if the plan is to sprinkle some mobile quarterback plays into the playbook? By all means. But the Rams have committed to starting a pocket passer once more. And as expected, that quarterback is not Jared Goff.
Quarterbacks will be in excess this offseason. There is no shortage of quarterbacks who will hit the NFL Free Agency Market in 2021. And there will be more quarterbacks on the move this year than any other NFL season before.
So the LA Rams may not be done at quarterback, just yet. At 2020 prices, the Rams could consider adding a veteran quarterback like Joe Flacco, C.J. Beathard, Nick Mullens, or others.
The LA Rams were certainly at the epicenter of the first blockbuster trade for the 2021 NFL season. But the work is not done yet by any means. In fact, I’m not convinced that Stafford + Wolford will be the only quarterbacks on the Rams roster this season. With the team fully aware of the ‘win now’ mindset, do not be surprised if the Rams add another veteran QB. It was obvious that the Rams can add a veteran for the price of $1 million or less.
