Tight end Johnny

Tight end Johnny Mundt has so many functional uses in the LA Rams offense. Yet he continues to be added to the team one year at a time. And at the end of each season, he falls through the cracks of acknowledged contributors.  Another season, another year of anonymity.

Blocking tight ends get a bad reputation in the NFL. They are not as very valuable. They are not frequently targetted in the passing game, although they can catch the ball. They are not handed the ball often, although they can run with the ball. Instead, they line up on the line of scrimmage to give an offensive lineman a bit of a boost.

Blocking is one of the most important functions of an offense, but it’s seldom discussed. The importance of the function began to wane as fantasy football began to grow in popularity. No points are earned for a pancake of a defender. Highlight reels no long flash the incredible blocking of a key player. But it’s just as necessary.

Tight-end Johnny Mundt is a restricted free agent. As such, the LA Rams have the option to protect their rights to re-sign him by submitting a qualifying tender offer. But the Rams did not exercise that option in 2020, and I do not expect that they will do so in 2021 either.  The Rams will count on the other 31 NFL teams to focus on fantasy football statistics as well. Let’s hope that strategy pays off.

Mundt will play a larger role in the Stafford run offense.
