In 2020, the LA Rams had the best defense in the entire NFL. But with each year, contracts expire, and the team must reload. The issue is that the Rams will not have a first-round pick until 2024. They traded their first-round picks in 2022 and 2023 for star quarterback Matthew Stafford from the Detroit Lions. And they are still paying a first-round pick for the trade that acquired Jalen Ramsey from the Jacksonville Jaguars.

2021 will be considered ” win a championship or bust” for the Rams. However, you still need to built through the draft to have long-term success. The earliest pick they have in the 2021 NFL Draft is currently the 57th overall pick, which shows their extreme lack of draft capital.

The Rams have one of the best secondary units in the league led by All-Pro defensive back Jalen Ramsey and the services of pending free agent strong safety John Johnson III. The loss of defensive coordinator Brandon Staley could hurt them to enter the 2021 season. However, the addition of new quarterback Matt Stafford will put less pressure on the defense to get stops since he’s a clear upgrade from Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff.

The 2021 draft class is one of the best and deepest safety classes I’ve seen in a long time. Along with a couple of gifted outside pass rushers that can truly improve the weak point of the Rams defense. The defense looked nothing but fantastic in 2020, but why not improve an already dangerous secondary by putting someone with your star veteran safety John Johnson III.

The Rams also have aging offensive linemen such as 16-year veteran Andrew Whitworth.  It would make sense to consider drafting a bookend lineman.  He can protect newly acquired QB Stafford and second-year running back Cam Akers. The defense looked nothing but fantastic in 2020, but why not improve an already dangerous secondary by putting someone who can step up in the wake of star veteran safety John Johnson III’s testing the NFL Free Agency market.
