The LA Rams have waved farewell to a significant amount of NFL quality coaches this year. in fact, the number of open positions on the Rams coaching staff outnumbered the number of filled positions for a short duration.
Of course, since then the LA Rams have moved to fill open positions. Some fills involved outside coaches hired to give the team a fresh perspective. Other positions were filled with the promotion of internal candidates. One such position, assistant head coach, was vacated when the LA Rams lost linebacker coach Joe Barry initially to the LA Chargers, and then to the Green Bay Packers where he will be their new defensive coordinator.
That created a new opportunity for the LA Rams to promote an internal candidate. That’s exactly what they did. In fact, the LA Rams promoted second-year running backs coach Thomas Brown to add the title Assistant Head Coach.
Quietly, the @RamsNFL elevated running backs Thomas Brown to assistant head coach. The former @universityofga RB is a rising star and Coaching Kingmaker Sean McVay clearly recognized this with this promotion.

If you recall, it was during the HBO Hard Knocks series that newly hired running backs coach Thomas Brown flashed his brilliance as the Rams organization struggled to come to grips with social injustice.
Rams head coach Sean McVay has cited RBs coach @iamthomasbrown as a major guiding influence and presence for coaches and players as the group works toward actionable change. I hope you take some time to sit with Brown’s insight and perspective today: pic.twitter.com/SfjaJ6PO6x

Thomas Brown was indeed hired to be the LA Rams running backs coach after former RB Coach Skip Peete found a role with the Dallas Cowboys. His task most certainly was not easy. The Rams running game had declined, and the team needed to align three dissimilar and uncertain rushers into a cohesive and complementary group on the field.
That’s exactly what happened. The LA Rams broke out of the gates with a stronger running game, and the ability to move the chains with a new and improved ground game. It was Brown who popped his Achilles Tendon in training camp, yet refused to miss any time. That triggered head coach Sean McVay to discuss the value of Coach Brown, where he cited him as someone on a coordinator/head coach track.
It was clear that this promotion was, in part, out of concern that Brown’s next promotion was on the sooner-rather-than-later track. Not only does this help to retain a talented coach, but it serves to incentivize other coaches on staff with proof that the Rams are willing to promote internal candidates as well.
