LA Rams: Six under-the-radar offensive free agents
By Bret Stuter
Fullback
The LA Rams may not incorporate a fullback into their offense, but if they do, then fullback Michael Burton would be the ideal one to consider. For starters, he stands 6-foot-0 and weighs in at 240 pounds, making him an ideal size and weight. Think short yardage. In 2020, Burton rushed seven times and rushed for six first downs.
He is also adept at catching passes, catching 13 of 17 passes in his career for 81 yards, five first downs, and one touchdown. The Rams could certainly benefit from a player like Burton, who would double duty as both a blocking back and as a short-yardage runner.
Another plus is the fact that Burton played in the same backfield as Stafford in both 2015 and 2016. While seldom used, he did manage to catch six of seven passes thrown his way from Stafford for 39 yards, three first downs, and a touchdown.
Of course, there are other ways to infuse more blocking and short-yardage into the Rams offense. But adding another familiar face for Stafford is not the worst thing the Rams can do to help him transition to the new city, team, and offense. And it’s certain that both Cam Akers and Darrell Henderson would welcome a strong running back to grind out the tough yards as well as pick up the blocking duties.
