Salary cap musical chairs

In the game of numbers, salary cap musical chairs, it would seem that the LA Rams may be considering the removal of a roster spot at the position, or perhaps shaving the expense to fall more in line with other NFL teams. And the options to do so are very limited.

Breer cites Brockers’ contract as a modestly priced $9 million this year and next. He also goes on to cite a great deal of interest by teams calling on Rams WR Robert Woods.  Brockers has played exclusively for the LA Rams since being drafted by the team in 2012. He is currently entering year two of a three-year contract deal that pays him an average of $8 million per year.

The reduction of the 2021 salary cap is indeed problematic for all 32 NFL teams, but some have already cleared plenty of space are ready to reap the rewards of having stacks of cash in a depressed free agency market. Unfortunately, the LA Rams are not one of those teams. The LA Rams face the additional problem of having too few draft-picks in the 2021 NFL Draft as well.

We lobbied for the Rams to consider the trade route to resolve both matters, even to the point of listing five potential players up for trade to free up salary cap space and yield some additional picks for the upcoming NFL Draft. It seems that we are on the right track, but perhaps we’re on the wrong scent.

Per OverTheCap.com, trading Brockers could free up to $8 million in cap space for 2021 (if the post-June 1 option is chosen). That is a huge dent in the team’s current estimated ($35 million) deficit. What could Brockers get in return? Based on the trade partner’s needs and enthusiasm, Michael Brockers could get a draft pick as high as a late third-rounder.  Brockers is affordable, has two years remaining, is a huge run defender, and has proven to have the ability to get to the quarterback.
